Spring / Summer 2009 • Montpelier Bikes worked with the DPW staff to add bicycle lanes to the Route 2 / 302 construction projects.  With a turnout of around 50-60 bicyclists to a City Council meeting, Montpelier Bikes presented a proposal to the city to include bike lanes in this project as a change order to construction already underway.  The Council endorsed the addition and gave preliminary support to an on-road bicycle network grant application through the Transportation Enhancements grant.  Click here for the PDF handout (200k) that was provided to the council, including photos of what the network would look like.

January 2009 • Montpelier Bikes' presentation to the Montpelier Planning Commission.  The planning commission approved the bicycle parking ideas we circulated, gave a preliminary approval to a Complete Streets Resolution, and supported the creation of a Bicycle Master Plan for Montpelier.  See details, including the handouts from the presentation - online at the old website (blog) - http://montpelierbikes.blogspot.com

December 2008 • Montpelier Bikes hosted a preliminary discussion of a Bicycle Ambassadors Program for Montpelier.  The participants brainstormed and critiqued ideas to promote bicycling in person.  The participants decided not to form a visible bicycle ambassador corps, but instead to promote bicycling in lower-key ways, including a series of very relaxed beginner rides, a Bike Buddy program through the Onion River Exchange (or ad hoc), and by filming videos for youtube to show good lane positioning on downtown Montpelier streets and intersections.

Fall 2008 • Montpelier Bikes conducted a field survey of existing bicycle parking - here's a brief report, including a link to a map of the existing bike racks.  Some of these racks are poorly located, and many of them are of an older (less usable) style.  Montpelier Bikes then followed up with a public opinion survey on bicycle parking - to find out where bicyclists wanted to see bicycle racks, and where each individual bicyclist said he/she would use the racks.

Summer 2008 • Montpelier Bikes distributed 10 "Slow Down Watch for Bikes" to homeowners located in strategic locations along main roads in Montpelier - Main St., Elm St., Terrace St., Barre St., and College St.   We also participated in the Montpelier Independence Day parade, conducted a count of bicyclists in downtown Montpelier, and worked with the Montpelier Police Department to create a handout on Montpelier Bicycle Laws.

Spring 2008 • Montpelier Bikes participated in the Montpelier Energy Team's Second Town Meeting, and hosted discussions of bicycle education/encouragement and engineering improvements.

Spring 2007 • Montpelier Bikes was formed from the Montpelier Energy Team Town Meeting, held at National Life the evening before Town Meeting Day.  Montpelier Bikes went on to become one of the more active of the Energy Team's "subteams."
