The Cross Vermont Trail is a 75-mile trail-in-development to span the state of Vermont from South Burlington to Wells River. The trail passes through Montpelier, and an on-road route was signed in early 2009 where an off-road route is currently not available. This is a project of the Cross Vermont Trail Association. In 2009, volunteer work crews will be working on the trail in East Montpelier. See the Cross Vermont Trail Association's " Get Involved" page on their website for details. A quick summary of the route: - From South Burlington into Richmond, the path follows various local multi-use trails, with some on-road segments.
- Heading east from Richmond, it follows recreation paths and
paved and unpaved roads through Duxbury, Waterbury, Moretown and
Berlin. In several places, the trail uses "River Road" on the south side of the Winooski as a low-traffic alternative to Route 2.
- In Washington, Orange, and Caledonia Counties, the trail follows
portions of the former Montpelier-Wells River Railroad bed. This
mostly-intact, 36-mile route connects the towns of Montpelier,
East Montpelier, Plainfield, Marshfield, Peacham, Groton, Reygate
and Newbury.
